History of the Quran

The history of the Qur'an deals with the timeline and origin of the Qur'an, the Islamic holy book and its written compilations into manuscripts. It spans several centuries, based on historical findings, and forms an important part of early Islamic history.

Muslims believe that the Quran was orally revealed by God to the final prophet, Muhammad, through the archangel Gabriel (Jibril), incrementally over a period of some 23 years, beginning on 22 December 609 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632, the year of his death.

Where is the original Quran kept?

The so-called Codex Parisino-petropolitanus formerly conserved portions of two of the oldest extant Quranic manuscripts. Most surviving leaves represent a Quran that is preserved in various fragments, the largest part of which are kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, as BNF Arabe 328(ab).

The Quran remains unchanged ever since its inception over 1400 ago.” This is simply not correct. The first written Quran was compiled by Abu Bakr and after his death, entrusted to Mohammad's widow Hafsa bint Umar. She stated that two suras disappeared, supposedly eaten by a goat.

The Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.s) in verses over a period of 23 years. After the Prophet, the companions of the prophet (who had memorized the entire Qurancompiled it in a written form and distributed it.

The chapters are arranged roughly in order of descending size; therefore the arrangement of the Quran is neither chronological nor thematic.

Hazrat Usman was the first Hafiz of the Holy Quran. people who have completely memorized the Quran is called Hafiz Quran. Hadrat Usman (R.A.) belonged to a noble family of Quraish in Mecca. His ancestral pedigree joins with that of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi wa Sallam) in the fifth generation.

The process of memorizing the Quran has started since the first revelation revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW, until he was called as "Sayyid al-Huffaz" and "Awwal Jumma" or the first man to memorize the Quran.

What was the first surah revealed?

In the Quran, the first revelations to Muhammad were only the first few verses (ayats) of Surahs Alaq, Muzzammil, Al-Muddathir, etc. Most narrators recorded that al-Fātiḥah was the first complete Surah revealed to Muhammad.
The Quran is the most sacred object in the daily lives of Muslims, and burning it would be considered an offense against God. Islam teaches that the holy book is the direct word of God, received by the prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel, and it defines the belief and conduct for followers of the religion.
